also there is a social incentive as you don't have your content deleted by their moderation service due to it not being under bluesky's control as well as a cool handle
it took 14 months from service launch to open federation with other data servers (which isn't that long compared to certain fedi services doing the same thing cough loops), also here's a graph starting from launch with a recent spike in traffic as communities begin to launch their own PDSes and give out invites
